Insurance - Archery Canada General Liability policy

One of the benefits of the BC Archery memberships is the insurance coverage through the Archery Canada General Liability policy.

BC Archery is not in the business of selling insurance or providing insurance advice.

We sell a membership to the provincial association.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Defines a Club?

  • Not-for-profit entity
  • Has a Board of Directors and numerous volunteers
  • Follows the safety officer / coach requirements as laid out in the NSO/PSO contract
  • If a Club is not a member of BC Archery/Archery Canada, the insurance will not cover that club nor its own participants. This insurance policy will cover only AC/BCAA members that are participating at the event.

How does the "Guest" Insurance work?

In order for the insurance portion of your club membership to be valid, ALL club members & participants must also be members of BC Archery. If they are not, then you must report them as Guests, following the process as laid out in the Guest & Short Term Participant Policy. If you do not require your members to be BC Archery members & you do not report them as Guests, then the insurance portion of your membership is VOID and you should ensure that you have adequate insurance coverage by some other means.

A “guest” should not appear on the Guest register more than 3 times in a calender year. Participation beyond 3 times is no longer considered a “guest” and the individual should become a member of BC Archery to not jeopardize the insurance coverage for the individual or for the club.

Near the end of the year, the Executive Director will contact all the clubs and request a "Guest" Insurance reporting log that reflects total number of "Guests" that were recorded at your club. BC Archery is then responsible to report the total guest numbers to Archery Canada, who then reports to the insurance provider.

NOTE: "Guests" are not covered to participate in events, competitions, or tournaments. The Guest and Short-term Participant policy covers those that attend as "infrequent participants" for class trips, day camps or try-it programs, up to 3 times per year.

Who/What does the Insurance Cover??

  • Volunteers (helpers at special events)
  • Excess coverage on vehicle rental when rented for a club activity—best to rent in the name of the Club / PSO
  • Participation at club activities & events
    • Organized and run by an archery club
    • Individual members are covered when participating at any archery event regardless if the club hosting the event is a member-club or not.
  • Worldwide coverage

How do I get a Certificate of Insurance for my club?

To request a certificate please visit Archery Canada's insurance program

How much insurance coverage do I have?

The policy has $5 million first-party coverage for personal liability, personal injury, medical payments, public liability and property damage, cross liability, non-owned automobile, worldwide coverage, and primary coverage for bowhunting activities (including hunting with crossbows)

Am I covered if I’m shooting in my backyard or garage?

Backyard activities are not covered as they are considered as personal activities where a club has no control of the event and surrounding activities (swimming pools, BBQs, alcohol, etc) which may result in an accident and a lawsuit. Backyard activities may be covered under the homeowner’s personal insurance. The homeowner should call his/her insurance broker to find out whether the activity is covered

What is meant by a “club-related activity”

All activities that are organized and run by an Archery Club

Am I covered when I shoot at a non-member club

The Archery Canada CGL policy covers you anywhere in the world. Coverage applies to participation with clubs whether or not they are a member-club. If the club is not a member of Archery Canada, the insurance policy will not cover that club, nor its own participants. The policy will cover only Archery Canada members that are participating in the event

What about outside of Canada—what if I am at an NFAA club or tournament in Seattle which is not affiliated with World Archery or USA Archery?

The Archery Canada General Liability policy has worldwide coverage; the policy will cover Archery Canada members, coaches, volunteers, etc while participating in the event with the non-affiliated club. However, those clubs may have their own requirements for participation and you may need to purchase a day-pass or temporary event membership, etc. The AC Accident Insurance Policy has Canada-wide coverage only

The policy has coverage for Bowhunting activities, but this would never be a “club-related activity”, so how does that fit?

Special coverage for bowhunting activities was added to the insurance program a few years ago. Insurers understand that bowhunting is not a club-related activity but agreed to include coverage in order to support the needs of the members

If individuals are charged for private or group coaching or lessons, is this covered, or is this considered to be a business activity?

Any coach/instructor that provides lessons must do it on behalf of an Archery Canada club. If the activity benefits the club, then the coach/instructor and volunteers are covered under the policy. The club may remunerate the coach/instructor. The individuals taking the lessons, if not current AC/BC Archery members, would have to be reported under the Guest and Short-Term Participant policy guidelines. It is recommended that the Club and Coaches draft a contract outlining responsibilities (conform to NCCP requirements, club policies, etc) and/or remuneration details.

If the coach/instructor wishes to provide lessons under his own name and for his own profit, he would have to call his personal insurance broker to see if the activity would be covered (ie. Get his own business insurance)

I shoot a crossbow, am I covered?

The policy covers the use of crossbows unless prohibited by the club or under municipal bylaw.

I run a member-club, is the club covered?

For insurance purposes, the definition of a Club is:
  • Not-for-profit entity
  • Has a Board of Directors and numerous volunteers
  • Follows the safety officer / coach requirements as laid out in the NSO/PSO contract
  • If a Club is not a member of AC/BC Archery, the insurance will not cover that club nor its own participants. This insurance policy will cover only AC/BC Archery members that are participating at the event.
  • All the participants of the Club must also be members of AC/BC Archery and Guests must be reported as per the guidelines set out in the Guest and Short-term Participant Policy. If the Club does not require all participants to be members of AC/BC Archery then the insurance portion of the membership is VOID and it would be in your best interest to obtain private insurance through your local broker.
  • If the Club is affiliated with a rifle/gun shooting range, then only the archery activities of the club would be covered, and once again, all archery participants must be members of AC/BC Archery and Guests must be reported as per the guidelines set out in the Guest and Short-term Participant Policy. The rifle/gun activities should be covered under separate insurance
